Tongues and the Baptism of the Holy Spirit
Act 2:1 When the Day
of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
Act 2:2 and suddenly
there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the
whole house where they were sitting
Act 2:3 then there
appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of
them.
Act 2:4 and they were
all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues,
as the Spirit gave them utterance.

The baptism of the
Holy Spirt and the gift of tongues are one and the same. When the Holy
Spirit came He sat upon each of them cloven tongues as of fire; then
they were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke as the Holy Spirit gave them utterance.
You cannot say that you have the baptism of the Holy Spirit and not speak in
tongues.

The baptism of the
Holy Spirit and the gift of tongues come upon everyone who believes in
Jesus and they receive Him the same as on the day of Pentecost.
Act 10:44 while Peter
was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard
the word.
Act 10:45 and those
of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter,
because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also.
Act 10:46 for they
heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answered,
Act 10:47 “Can anyone
forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit
just as we have?”
The Gentiles received
the filling of the Holy Spirt (Baptism) and the gift of tongues at the
same time like Peter because the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is the filling of
the Holy Spirit and the gift of tongues which are inseparable. We today
can have the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and it will be the same as in the
beginning.
Tongues are
for edification, prophesy, prayer and speaking the wonderful things of God. 1
Corinthians14:4-5 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who
prophesies edifies the church. He who prophesies is greater than he who speaks
with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive
edification. Tongues edify yourself and the Church when done properly. A public
tongue is prophesy given to the Church. 1
Corinthians 14:13-14 therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that
he may interpret. For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my
understanding is unfruitful. A Christian has a prayer life by speaking in tongues.
Another important
reason why God wants all Christians to speak in tongues is for the
blessing of others. As you know that speaking in tongues is speaking in
an unknown language to you but someone from that country can understand it.
Some tongues are Heavenly languages. 1 Corinthians 13:1 though I speak
with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love I am just
noise. Heavenly language is what the
Angels speak.
A Christian needs to
speak in tongues so that his tongue is a blessing to others. James 3:8
but no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly
poison. No man can tame the tongue but God can tame the tongue by
giving all Christians the gift of tongues which is one with the baptism
of the Holy Spirit. Let us be a blessing to the body of Christ by speaking
words of edification building up one another in love.
